Surprised from Friends, Bikers and Shipping matters

Words spreading from myself to closed friends and friends getting bigger and bigger Almost everyday I received text from friend said that they want to support the mission, despite their belief and religion, they willing to help and do something for others. Boxes of soap, books, pencil, crayon, stationary and clothing arrived at Joko Seputro and Doddy Devrian’s house and I found the shipping matters while I am in Yogyakarta

I repacked 6 boxes into 4, 1 boxes approx.. 50x60x60cm with 45kg in total. I went to the shipping company and asked for the quote, it made my jaw drop when they said it’s Rp 7,780.000 (Approx. CAD$775) I asked for a review and asked an option… finally they gave me a good price CAD$200 in total and it will take approx.. 3 week from Yogyakarta to Labuan Bajo

The shipping from Surabaya is another story. 12 boxes ready to go to Flores but I worried and think about how much money I have to pay.. it’s all beyond my expectation and my budget plan. Except for the art supplies and paint and brush for the wall and other equipments. Lucky.. when I spent time in Surabaya, at Joko Seputro’s house, theres a shipping company and they ship to Flores and Adonara. With friends help finally I got quotes for the stuff, they charge Rp 9000,-/Kg (Approx. CAD 0.90cents) But… the problem is heavy stuff in those 12 boxes, or maybe about 250Kg my estimate. Djoko Seputro willing to help because I have to go back to Bali and looking after the other donations at my Mom’s house

My Mom is 84 years old this year, she is curious about my mission, I explained my plan and she said I have something for children, hope they will like it. She is so creative, she do beading, made a keychain, Rosario or any other Handmade products, she provide a box full of her own handmade to support my mission, made my eyes warm. But I am proud of my Mom even if she’s not so well but she’s willing to support, to donate her creations for children in Flores and Adonara. I am proud of my Mom as I proud of Oma Winn Fisher, Oma Joan Walker and Oma Edith Karpetz who spent hours to make a Handmade Comfort Dolls for children in Flores and Adonara. Proud of Deborah Kennedy and proud of Kingsway Baptist Church Family for fully support.. proud of my Kids ayu and Arya and also proud of my friends and fellas

This is my first time ever to do my own mission in Indonesia with trial and error, hope I learn from it and do better next.

Paper Works

To extend my visa in Indonesia is another great experience, I use Visa Kunjungan Sosial Budaya (Social & Culture Visit) and Meilia (Mey) as my sponsor from Malang

So I have to extend my visa in Malang, East Java

When I aarived in Bali, I asked the Immigration Officer how to extend the visa, The Officer said that the sponsor should be here in person and fill the form… Then I think it’s better to extend my visa in Malang, where Mey live

I decided to extend my Visa in malang and so…. The paper works begin

I went to the Immigration Office in Malang and asked for extention visa, the officer gave me the form and told me back in 2 days

I completed the form and also sponsorship letter from Mey and bring the the immigration office… the officer received and said please come back again in the next 3 days (ohh my….)

The next process was paying and take a photograph and again the officer said please come back on Monday (3days)

On Monday I came as early as I can hoping it’s done .. but again after I paid Rp 355.000 (approx.. CAD36) the officer said come back in 2 days..  Maannnnn…..

Can you imagine how frustrated I am go back and forth waiting and waiting

My first experience using Visa Kunjungan Sosial Budaya needs more than a week and valid til January 7th, 2018

In total for the Visa fee will be CAD$36×4 months = CAD$144

October Good news and Bad news

Mid October 2017 ; I prepare myself to gather donations from local supporter, to Surabaya, Malang (East Java) and to Surakarta (Solo, Central Java) for my group Painting Exhibition, meet old friend in Yogyakarta and will visit Borobudur to take a closer look at all the Temple Relief on it’s wall and planning to visit Mendut Temple Monk Monastery, close to Borobudur

I went to Surabaya by plane from Bali and it took about half an hour to Surabaya, spent a night at my high school classmate’s house : Sumardiyono and again he lend me his beautiful bike Kawazaki Estrella. He also gather donation for children in Flores and Adonara too, boxes of clothing and books

I feel free to ride solo, so happy to hit the road again. Race with other riders, buses and trucks side by side to Malang is a challenge and burnt my adrenalin. In Malang also boxes of clothing and books ready to go to Flores and Adonara. I am amazed how my friends and friends of my friend willing to support my mission, didn’t expect this much

Next day I ride to Surakarta, Central Java, Less then 8 hours arrived in City of Batik, Surakarta (Solo) Nasi Liwet is Surakarta best traditional food, rice serve with chicken stew, coconut oil sauce and veggies. The rice was not cook with rice cooker but stir slowly with a low temperature. Nasi Liwet and hot lemon is the best to start my day in Surakarta

Around 8AM I met my fellow artist ; I Gusti Nengah Nurata and his wife Becky and Made Budhiana… I didn’t see Nurata almost 30 years, it’s a nostalgic moment to see him again in Surakarta, I saw Budhiana last year in his Studio in Denpasar, Bali. It’s not a coincidence to see them again as we remember 3 of us in an old photograph in Yogyakarta 30 years ago. We still have a good energy to paint, to create an artistic and meaningful painting , world peace message.

October 23rd, 2017 :  We went to the opening of SIVA (Solo International Visual Art) Exhibition at Surakarta Institute of Art where Nurata is one of the Dean at Art Department. Surrounded by the paintings and paper sculpture transport me in a different world, full of energy and artistic feelings. Met Nurata’s International students; from Spain, Mexico, Italy and Argentina. Nurata gave some of his painting exhibition catalogue for Labuan Bajo Art Community, Thank you for support, Budhiana will collect his catalogue too.

The Next day I ride to Yogyakarta, city where I spent 5,5 years to finish my Interior Design at ASRI Art Institute of Indonesia 1978 – 1984. Bring back my memories, the city atmosphere, the people, the culture and food. Met my friend, Rahma Yustika, she helped me to collect donations from friends, 5 boxes of books, tooth brush, soap, clothing and toys, crayon and drawing books, repack and take to the shipping company. It’s quite expensive to send by land, for 45Kg I have to pay Rp 2000.000 ($CAD 200) and will take about 2 weeks to Labuan Bajo

I have a chance to visit the new Campus ISI, Yogyakarta Institute of Art and watched the International Performances , it was great, and I had a good time to meet my friends again, enjoy my quality time

After spent two nights in Yogyakarta, my Argentinian friend Maria Laura and I went to Borobudur, amazed by the works of art in Borobudur the World Heritage of Buddhist Temple, I wonder how they built this massive stone temple, what kind of technology they had back in those days. Statue and wall relief perfectly done. In the evening we visit Mendut Monk Monastery and join the quite time chanting with monks for an hour… what an experience…

On the way back to Yogyakarta, Laura and I spent a night at Koni Herawati’s house in Muntilan, a small town close to Borobudur, she graduated from ASRI Art Institute too, majoring in Advertising Department but she also an artist and potter. Her house is an old Chinese Style family house, full on antiques, met her Mom too. I really enjoy had a conversation with Laura and Koni. Back to Yogyakarta, I had a chance to see my fellow artist Desy Gitary had her group exhibition, nice talking to Desy and friends .

Next plan is go to Malang and help Meilia Shofa to prepare her performance at Monkey Garage, she will use water as property. She will perform at Melaka Art & Performnace Festival (Malaysia) on November 23, 2017. Good Luck Mey…

Unexpected news from my extended family in Surabaya… my Uncle Hindarto Wangsayudha passed away shocked me, Just a week ago I met him and spent a quality time with him, talk about my plan and he gave me his best Golden Sand Black Obsidian ring, it’s his handmade as his last gift to myself.. I have to go back to Surabaya for his cremation.. Spent my days in Surabaya, surrounded by family and friends, accompany my Uncle to his last resort and ready to unite with Mother Earth. So long my Uncle, see you again someday

November 8th 2017 After good and bad news I went to Joko Seputro’s house where he helped me gather all friend and biker’s support. 11 boxes of soap, tooth brush, books, crayon, clothing and toys ready to go to Flores and Adonara. I repack and sort donations for children in Flores (Labuan Bajo and Ruteng) and also for Adonara, and finally 9 boxes ready for shipping by tomorrow

I have no idea how much it’s cost, will try sea freight instead of land, much cheaper or post office. Let’s see by tomorrow. There’s still some donations at Doddy Devrian’s house and my Mom’s house in Bali, will arrange those later when I arrive in Bali

Day 1, October 10 2017 at 3:15 pm : Finally, touched down in Bali with tons of expectations and unexpected experience regarding my mission. Immigration Officer at Ngurah Rai International Airport (Bali) stamped 60 days stay permit on my Canadian Passport and explain I must extend my visa at Immigration Office in Denpasar for the next 30 days and have to pay Rp355.000 (approx. CAD $40) or pay CAD $120 I can stay till end of March 2018. And the problem is I have to apply visa extention every month, mean I have to go back and forth Flores to Bali. There’s no Immigration office in rural island.

Today I also got news from SIVA (Solo International Visual Art) will be held at Solo (Surakarta, Central Java) said that 3 of my paintings finally arrived and safe, ready to be frame for the Exhibition in October 23, 2017 at Indonesian Art Institute, Solo (Central Java) Thank you to my fellow famous artist : IGN Nurata for inviting me and will have a group exhibition in Toronto in the future. Fingers crossed. The next day I went to Immigration Office at Renon to get the information regarding my stay; the Officer said I need to provide my sponsor letter again every time I extend my Visa (small problem arise…)

Met my buddy (neighbour) who made the mission t-shirt and looks great.. even it’s just black and white. Again Thank you to Arya Putra Djenar for this beautiful Pegasus design for patch and t-shirt

In the evening I have a meeting with my Bikers Brother Ama Galang’s (Native Adonara) he is a mechanic too who travelled and riding solo around Indonesia twice… we talked, plan and arrange the time frame ready to go in end of October or the first week of November 2017. October 14, 2017 : Cleaning the house, where my Mom live by herself, She will be 85 years this October 24 2017 even the house are dusty, cobweb’s everywhere and plants grow wild I am happy to help her clean the house. She’s very happy I am home and help her, we talked and share stories. I knew she’s not so well, her knee and back not great again, she walk slower compare to couple of month ago. I started thinking of what should I do, how to help to help her, to accompany her here in Bali. I don’t know. Should I back to Canada a while, prepare to come back here for a year or two to accompany her…. I don’t know…Still confused

In the evening I sat in the kitchen and suddenly my heart beating looking at wrapped my Old Harley (Roadster 1000cc, 1976) I open the cover, look at her, how I miss this beautiful bike… Back in the day, we hit the road, long way from Bali, Surabaya (East Java) to Yogyakarta (Central Java) and to Bandung (West Java)

And before I left Bali in 2004, I took it apart; the exhaust, gas tank and other parts, put in a bag, covered the engine… and today I saw her again Hello Old Harley my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again… we’ll hit the road again someday, I promise
